MEYSPRING Artist of the Month - November 2022

Congrats, Carrozza Art Co!

Introducing our November Artist of the Month, Angela Carrozza. She is an Albertan-based mixed media artist, proud mom, and owner of Carrozza Art Co. Her skillset lies in epoxy resin, focusing on geodes and seascapes. Most of her creations are poured on canvases or wood trays, and they’re always stunning! At MEYSPRING, we are so lucky to have been a part of her creative journey and so thrilled to share it with you.

Tell us more about yourself!

My art journey began at a young age with winning 28 coloring contests - Remember those? The best! I proceeded to take art classes all the way through university. My 30 years on this planet have taken me to many places, but I always return to art.

I am also a registered dietitian. Both “jobs” are so important to me and use a different side of my brain. Being a dietitian in health care is very structured, fast-paced, and requires critical thinking skills.

Art is my therapy after working busy days in the hospital. It grounds me and keeps the good feelings flowing; being able to create something truly spectacular and think, “I made this!” is a feeling I want to experience over and over again.

I also have a 2.5-year-old daughter; she is my life's light! I hope she loves art as much as mom, as I want to teach her about all the different art mediums, showing her she’s limitless.

How long have you been working with resin?

Three years now! Best transition of my life from acrylic painting!

What makes/made you choose MEYSPRING pigments?

MEYSPRING had the exact colors I wanted packed in the 3 Collections! I honestly didn’t need to look anywhere else. I knew other artists who used MEYSPRING, and their creations were beautiful. The pigments looked rich, opaque, and full of shimmer. That’s what I needed!

What is your favorite pigment color or color scheme?

When creating seascapes, I use a lot of Blues and Turquoise (particularly Mermaid Dust and Pacific Blue). When it comes to geode designs, I love working with Bronze Stone, Pure Copper, White Pearl, Dazzling Diamond, and then any splash of color. I recently tried Rose Quartz, and it was lovely!

Where do you find your inspiration or motivation?

I know I am not the only one to say this, but nature. I was the child who wanted to go to the rock and gem show and to stop by any rock and gem store while traveling, taking photos with the largest geodes.

My passion for rocks and gems really pulled me into resin art, as I wanted to create pieces resembling natural specimens. And well, with oceans, who doesn’t love them? So many of my clients love the water look, so their love for it keeps me making them, and of course, they’re so fun to make!

How much time do you dedicate to your resin art?

It depends on the season, but I spend more time on art in the Winter months doing about 10 hours per week. As a dietitian, mom, and wife, there is only so much time in the day.

What are your goals for your artistic journey?

I really want to experiment more with crystal molds. I absolutely love including natural rocks and gems in my art pieces, but sometimes you can’t find exactly what you want for the piece, and the cost can be unrealistic. So, I want to create more resin crystals, but my first step is getting the pressure pot and compressor! I have so much to learn, and it’s an investment.

What is the most significant "Aha moment" while creating resin pieces?

Oh my goodness, it was the temperature of my art room. I was getting SO many cured bubbles in my resin, and I realized it was because my art room was only 16°C (60.8°F)! I learned it had to be at least 21°C (69.8°F). Once I solved that problem, my pieces were flawless! Also, investing in an electric sander for the back of my charcuterie boards. I used to sand by hand!

What advice would you like to share with aspiring resin artists?

Watch plenty of videos before getting started. Read up on blogs, start small and experiment. Don’t put any pressure on yourself. Also, there is no “right” and “wrong” way of doing anything unless your studio is not at the right temperature!
