MEYSPRING Artist of the Month - December 2022

Congrats, Aesthetically Jess!

We can’t believe we’re wrapping up another year of celebrating the outstanding artists in the MEYSPRING Community! On that note, we’re happy to bring you our final Artist of the Month for 2022, Jessica Shelton of @aestheticallyjess_! She is an amazingly gifted resin geode and ocean artist based in Ontario, Canada, and one of our exceptional Brand Ambassadors.

Being a part of Jess’s journey, we’ve come to appreciate her candor and openness with achievements, struggles, nuisances, and the overall reality of being an artist that many can relate to. She always puts into perspective what goes on behind the scenes of being an artist in the spotlight.

MEYSPRING Artist of the Month | December 2022

This year alone, we’ve watched Jess blossom into becoming a mentor to many artists, sharing many techniques she uses to create her masterpieces. Most recently, she launched her own academy, which includes how she uses her favorite MEYSPRING Pigments in neutral metallic pieces!

Tell us more about yourself!

Growing up, I was painfully shy and wouldn’t say a word to anyone for the longest time. I began my artistic journey at a young age through drawing and ceramics. Art has always been my passion, and after mastering many different art forms, I’ve settled into creating eye-catching geode-inspired resin pieces.

My parents are animal lovers, and I grew up with many rescues. I currently have five pets, four of which are seniors.

I’m getting married in 2024, and I’m trying to include as many artistic details as possible in my wedding; the guest book is actually going to be a resin tray!

What made you want to become an artist?

It happened very randomly. I was always artistic growing up, and I spent a lot of time drawing and painting ceramics. However, I stopped for years and then found it again later in life when I was trying to find something creative to help with my mental health; the job I had at the time (and ironically again) dealt with a lot of death which weighed on me.

How long have you been working with resin?

I’ve been working with resin for nearly four years.

What makes/made you choose MEYSPRING pigments?

Their formula really stood out to me. I had started my resin journey only using pastes because I thought pastes were superior. MEYSPRING was the first pigment brand that caught my eye. After trying other pigment brands, I realized how special they are. I also love the team behind the brand.

What is your favorite pigment color and/or color scheme?

I use the MEYSPRING whites and true metallics almost daily! However, Dazzling Diamond is probably my favorite; it’s versatile and can be added to any other color to make it brighter and more shimmery. Gilded Gold is a close second fave.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I get my inspiration from everywhere. Sometimes I’ll see a person wearing a really cool outfit with fun colors or someone’s wedding colors and be inspired. It hits me at the most random times, by the most random things.

How much time do you dedicate to your resin art?

That’s hard to measure because I’m always thinking about it, but I’d say about 20 hours per week are actually spent pouring, though!

What are your goals for your artistic journey?

I’ve fallen in love with teaching resin art, so I’d love to continue publishing courses and bond with my students. It’s so much fun to talk art, troubleshoot with my art friends and students, and just see how far they’ve come.

What is the most significant "Aha moment" you've had while creating resin pieces?

Pour with the right intention. While not every piece will be a masterpiece, every piece will contribute to mastering this skill. It takes the pressure off and prioritizes enjoying the process.

What advice, tips, or tricks would you like to share with aspiring resin artists?

Don’t be too hard on yourself, and practice like crazy. It’s hard when a piece doesn’t go as planned, but try not to look at it as a waste of product but as an investment into the future YOU.

Congratulations again to Jessica on winning MEYSPRING Artist of the Month - December 2022!
